Chiefs of treaty no. 8 [alberta] decide to act | January 11, 2013
Today, in Ottawa, the Grand Chief of Treaty 8 First Nations of Alberta is meeting with the Prime Minister. Amidst a storm of Chiefs boycotting the meeting the Grand Chief has stayed true to the mandate he was given by the Chiefs of Treaty No. 8 [Alberta]. The Grand Chief says "We have decided to take this opportunity to bring the message of Treaty No. 8 [Alberta] to the Prime Minister," he added "As spokesman for Treaty No. 8 [Alberta] this is the mandate I have been given by my fellow Chiefs and we will follow through."
While the Grand Chief is participating he is very quick to point out that they are only attending to give the Prime Minister a plan for setting up an ongoing dialogue with the Chiefs of Treaty No. 8 [Alberta]. "We believe that the first step in improving the Treaty Relationship starts here and continues with the Prime Minister committing to come and meet with all our Chiefs. Meeting directly with our Chiefs is the only way that real solutions that achieve real results will occur,' says the Grand Chief.
"Some of my Chiefs have been very vocal by saying that if we don't follow through with this historic opportunity than we are just allowing more damage to happen to the environment."
