Treaty 8 First Nations of Alberta Annual General Meeting and grand chief election | July 12, 2013
Recently, Treaty 8 First Nations of Alberta held their Annual General Meeting and Grand Chief election in Atikameg, Alberta.
The event, graciously hosted by Kee Tas Kee Now Tribal Council, was well attended by the Chiefs, Elders and others from across Treaty 8. Though it rained throughout the week, that didn't stop people from speaking passionately about issues surrounding their communities.
On the final day of the meeting, an election was held to choose the Grand Chief for the coming year. Though the election was a tight race, Chief Richard Kappo of Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation won, becoming the new Grand Chief. As well, Chief Romeo Cardinal of Bigstone Cree Nation, was elected Deputy Grand Chief. Join all of us at Treaty 8 First Nations of Alberta in wishing them our most sincere congratulations. We are looking forward to working with them in the upcoming year.
As well, we would like to thank all the volunteers who helped out to make the event such a success.
Finally, we want to send out a large thank you to Chief Roland Twinn for all his hard work and dedicated service in being our Grand Chief throughout this last year.
