Nations of Treaty 8 Urban CFS office is seeking two (2) Prevention Workers.  The Prevention Worker is responsible for working directly with Treaty 8 children, youth, and families to support them in achieving stability and behavioral changes where safety issues are present.  This role provides prevention and early intervention support to Treaty 8 children, youth and families who are struggling with challenges that, if left unaddressed, may result in children and youth being at risk of a more intrusive Child Intervention response.  This role mentors, monitors and connects families to appropriate resources to help keep children and youth safe and improve their social, emotional and health outcomes. The Prevention Worker also engages with families towards the goal of strengthening them so that they remain a family unit, while meeting their children’s needs for safety, healing, and well-being.    

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assesses child safety, risk, and wellbeing, while respecting the culture and unique context of each child and family.
  • Assists in the development of comprehensive Support Plans and Cultural Plans to promote behavioral change and family stability by using a strength based, solution-focused, culturally appropriate approach.
  • Connects the children and family with appropriate cultural and natural supports.
  • Assists families in developing problem solving, conflict resolution and communication skills.
  • Supports family functioning, builds their capacity to provide a safe and stable environment, and improves their ability to resolve problems to help children and families on a prevention and early intervention basis. 
  • Meets with the children and family regularly to conduct ongoing assessments of the family’s progress and the children’s safety and wellbeing.
  • Monitors progress through appropriate face to face contact, family meetings, and contact with service providers.
  • Continuously reviews and updates Support Plans and Cultural Plans with children and families, and updates these plans based on the family’s progress, circumstances and/or regulations to ensure these plans reflect the current requirements of the clients.
  • Engages with service providers to ensure that families are receiving appropriate services. 
  • Ensures families are participating in appropriate services, treatments, and benefits to promote behavioral changes and family stability. 
  • Supports families to address areas that are barriers to effective parenting and family functioning.
  • Maintains accurate and relevant client records.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with Elders, communities, other social services agencies, government agencies, other providers, and stakeholders.

Qualifications:

  • Degree or Diploma in Social Work or Human Services-related field with a minimum of two years experience.
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check including vulnerable sector and Child Intervention Record Check (must be dated less than 3 months upon hiring).
  • Valid class 5 driver’s license, reliable transportation with $2 million liability insurance.
  • Working knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office Suite, including Office, Excel, Power Point and Outlook.
  • Knowledge & understanding of Treaty 8 First Nations community, culture and language will be an asset.
