The Bigstone Health Commission (BHC) is seeking a Community Prevention Coordinator, to join our talented Community & Public Health Team. This is a two (2) year full time term position within the community to support the goals and activities of the Alberta First Nations Cancer Prevention and Screening Practices (FNCPSP) Project. A primary aim of this role is to work as an associate to the CPPL to support the development, implementation and evaluation of a community-based, culturally grounded Cancer Prevention and Screening strategy with the purpose of improving cancer outcomes for community members across the continuum of care.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Cancer Prevention & Health Promotion Programming
  • Delivers cancer prevention and health promotion programming to individuals, families, and communities
  • Build and enhance trusting relationships with community Elders and Knowledge Holders, organizations, health care providers, and cancer survivors and their families
  • Develop, maintain and strengthen community linkages and partnerships
  • Participate in community engagement processes, including the development, implementation, and evaluation of a community Cancer Prevention and Screening strategy
  • Assess Community Needs
  • Works closely with Bigstone Health Commission to identify strengths, assets and capacities
  • Organizing Meetings & Workshops
  • Initiates and follows a monthly work plan
  • Takes responsibility for tracking all events, presentations, and participation and reports same at the end of each week/month
  • Other duties as required

  • Ability to be self-directed to meet demands and perform essential functions as outlined in the job description
  • Strong organizational skills including the ability to take responsibility for planning a meeting, workshop, or event
  • Excellent verbal communication and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively with others
  • Ability to engage in public speaking i.e. to both small and large groups
  • Ability to use “actively learning” strategies to engage participants in their own learning
  • Ability to create visually appealing, culturally informed, and factually accurate presentations and displays

Qualifications:

  • Diploma in Health related field or a Community Health Representative Certificate is preferred
  • Equivalent combined education and experience may be considered
  • Awareness and understanding of First Nations health philosophies, beliefs, traditional knowledge systems, and cultural practices is required.
  • Experience in need assessment and program planning in a First Nations setting is required.
  • Ability to speak Cree is considered a strong asset.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license, class 5 minimum
  • Must have or obtain within six months of hire First Aid/ CPR certification and maintain such.
  • WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System)
  • MUST have an up to date; Criminal Record Check, Vulnerable Sector Check, Child Youth Intervention Check, proof of Education and Certification credentials, three (3) work related references attached to Resume.
