The Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation (ACFN) is seeking to fill one (1) full-time, permanent position of Chief of Operations. This position consists of 5 days on, 2 days off; Monday to Friday, 7.5-hour days, and 37.5 hours per week. However, schedule, hours and work location may change from time to time to meet operational requirements. Reporting to the CEO, the Chief of Operations is part of the senior management team and oversees the daily operations; directs the implementation of the strategic plan; and manages ACFN’s goals and priorities. The incumbent will be responsible for providing the executive team and leadership with strategic information required to identify key priorities and operating efficiencies across all departments.


This is a local position to Fort McMurray, AB., or Fort Chipewyan, AB., and candidates must have their own accommodations and transportation. Please note COVID-19 workplace protocols and guidelines are in-force in the workplace, and there may be a requirement to work remotely from home, if necessary.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Contributes to ACFN’s Strategic Plan by providing information, advice, and proposed
  • recommendations.
  • Implements strategic priorities and goals across departments.
  • Liaise with the management team to ensure priorities, projects and goals are met.
  • Ensures the leadership team is supported and assigns action items.
  • Disseminates leadership decisions and ensures follow-up.
  • Conducts program review, gap analyses and areas for improvement.
  • Prepares a monthly briefing note and various reports as required.
  • Liaises with the CEO and the management team regarding priorities in the areas of administration and operations.
  • Reviews the delivery of ACFN’s programs and services; and ensures processes are effective, robust, and efficient.
  • Supports and executes departmental initiatives and assigns projects as required.
  • Responsible for the day-to-day issues to long-term organizational goals and objectives are met.
  • Supports the strategic planning and oversees key priorities and projects; ensuring operational requirements are met.
  • Other duties as required

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Public Administration, Business Administration,
  • Management, or in a related discipline or a combination of education (Grade 12), training and experience (minimum 5-10 years of management experience) may be considered.
  • A minimum of five years of management, strategic advisory or chief of operations experience is required.
  • Strong research, writing, and presentation skill.
  • A genuine passion for the issues that impact Indigenous peoples, and strong political acuity.
  • Understanding of the Canadian political landscape, including federal, provincial and municipal governments.
  • Creative, self-motivated and enjoys the opportunities and challenges of an entrepreneurial working environment.
  • Demonstrated time management and project management skills with the ability to meet deadlines while managing competing priorities.
  • Proficiency in all Microsoft Outlook; Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
  • Proficiency in Dene is an asset.
  • Willingness to work in a diverse workforce.
  • Willingness to travel, and is a condition of employment

  • Occasional travel; and is a condition of employment.
  • Working in an office environment.
  • High levels of stress and pressure.

Salary will be dependent on experience and qualifications.
